My Yard Sale Find - 19TX with matching remote speaker
#1

I happened to be driving down the street the other day when I saw this sitting in the driveway with a couple other items in a yard sale. Not being sure what I had seen I decided to turn around and check things out a little closer. Next thing I know I have myself what I believe is a Model 19TX with the matching remote speaker. The only thing I see missing are the back of the reciever and the dial escutcheon (anyone have one?). I don't believe all that black paint is original so at some point it will be coming off. I guess now it's time to dig up all the info I can on this set.....

Happily back in Illinois..not.

I wonder-Did Philco ever offer a special ebony version of any radio as a special order ?
Certainly other companies did such as Zenith Scott and McMurdo among maybe others.

What a great find.

I've never seen any documentation showing Philco offered any of their sets in all-ebony. Philco Furniture History gives details on some of the finishes Philco used, and I do not recall ever seeing ebony mentioned.

That having been said, it is certainly possible that any Philco set could have been painted ebony after the fact.

Jim, I have to say it too...what a great find! Icon_biggrin Icon_thumbup

What a great find.

Not that I am aware of, I think that some sets may have left the factory with an ivory paint job but among the baby grand sets not the console models. Radioaddict is right though, the black paint has to go, even if it was applied professionally it still isn't original.

My wife and I went to an Antique and Collectors Fair on Friday and there is a fella there with quite a few working sets. Sitting right in front of his booth is a 19TX with matching remote speaker. What gives, I thought these were suppose to be "rare" now in less than a week I find 2 of them..... btw, there was no ebony finish on the set he had. He was asking $175.00 for it.

Hmmm.. could be the legacy of a very good Philco salesman in your area.
