Philco Console Model 38-8
#1

We have a Philco Radio Console Model 38-8 bought by my wifes grandmother in 1938 (?). We have had it since the 80s, it does not work and we replaced the original grill (?) material. I have not been able to find anything on this model radio anywhere. I am interested in any information about Model 38-8. Also, we would like to sell it to someone who would appreciate it, if anyone has any ideas on the appropriate site (s) or a reasonable value we would appreciate your input.

Tell us approximately where you live. Sadly, the cost of shipping often exceeds any reasonable value of these old sets. I'm not personally interested.

If all else fails, drop a dime or two to see if any of the local High School Shop teachers or local hobbiest groups might want it.

Hi and welcome!

Here's info on the 38-8X from this site's Gallery:

http://www.philcoradio.com/gallery/1938a.htm#j

However, I suspect this is not the "information" you are looking for. I have learned over the years that 99.9% of people asking for "information" about a radio mean to say "I want to know what it is worth."

And when it comes to vintage radios, the "values" vary all over the map...literally. They sell for more on the West Coast due to the relative scarcity compared to the Midwest and East Coast.

Do keep in mind, also, that a radio's value will depend on how desirable it is to other collectors. Most console sets are not desirable to collectors. There are exceptions, but the 38-8X is, unfortunately, not one of them.

Having said all that, I cannot give you a dollar value of your radio. Perhaps others will be willing to hazard an educated guess. As I mentioned, there are no hard and fast "values" for any particular radio.

Oh, I forgot to mention: A radio's value will also depend on condition. A radio with good original grille cloth will be worth more than one that no longer has the original cloth, as one example. A set that is in good physical shape is worth more than one with peeling veneer, rusty chassis, etc.
