My New Acquisition's Today
#1

Hi All

Just bought from a fellow collector today a Nice 40-185 Console and a Philco 38-9. Both radios are very nice. One question though does anyone know where i can get a escutcheon and dial glass for the 38-9 Old or Reproduction??

Sincerely

Try Radiodaze http://www.radiodaze.com/category/600.aspx for the dial.

If the escutcheon is missing from the 38-9 you will need to find one salvaged from a junker set. The glass in that escutcheon is just plain clear glass, a glass shop could cut you a replacement. The dial in a 38-9 is on celluloid, if it's damaged I don't know if there is an reproduction for that model or not, I mean a high quality one not a cheap one made out of laminated paper.

I believe a 38-5 dial would work on your 38-9.

With respect to your escutchion there are several out there with different sized apertures (windows) through which you see the dial. You want to make sure that you get one with the smaller aperture that fits your two-band dial.

There are also different diameter escutchions, make sure you know which one you need.

The 40-180 has a metal escutchion, nice because it does not warp like the later models that used the same cabinet. Be careful with the rubber-insulated wiring, as the rubber gets brittle and comes off easily, leaving your wire bare and requiring additional work either replacing it or re-insulating it with shrink tubing.

Arran:

Thanks for the info. I will probably have to keep an eye out for a junker set. I just ordered the glass yesterday. Fortunately the dial is in great shape and does not need replacing

TA:

Thanks on the info on the 40-185! The set is playing good, however i need to check the internal antenna as i cannot get any shortwave stations at all. will have to work on that later today or this week as time permits.

Merry Christmas to both of you!!

FYI always a good idea to pull the chassis and verify "repairs." A 70+ year old radio playing on original components is a ticking time-bomb.

kj0002--I have a 40-180 chassis inside my 40-190 cabinet... if you average them you get a 40-185. (Just kidding... but it IS essentially the same chassis.) I can't get anything on my shortwave channel either. I'm assuming the bandwidth switch works, as I get variations in the caliber of static, but no actual broadcasts. Fortunately someone ran a long wire in the attic a hundred million years ago... I will have to strap my radio to that and see if I can pull something in.

The 40-150/155/180/185/190 chassis pulls in some darn nice sound once you do the necessary overhauls. Icon_biggrin
