restoring a 41-265 help please.
#1

I'm interested in knowing the top ten list for points on restoring a 41-265 I have. It powers up and pulls in AM stations only right now. I know the power cord needs to be replaced as do the volume and tone potentiometers. I'm sure there are some caps that should as well, but I would like an idea on which ones? As well, does anyone have a manual or worksheet on how to properly align the tuner so as to be able to pick up the other bands? I've downloaded what I can off the internet but I've yet to find a step by step on getting good alignment so as to maximize the stations one can pick up across all bands. Lastly, where does one pick up an extra tube set for this unit? I haven't tried looking on ebay just yet but will start doing this soon.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Steve

PS - Any idea on how to get a replacement speaker? The current one works, but it has a hole in the cone and is dry as dry can be.

Hi there,

Schematic and alignment info can be found here:

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/resources/413/M0013413.htm

Most people (including me) will suggest that ALL paper caps be replaced. They tend to be too troublesome to leave into place if you want a reliable radio. If you want to risk the bare minimum you can replace : the power supply filter caps (26, 26A, 39 on the diagram), Audio coupling #47, audio plate bypass #49, AC bypass caps (#57).

There are numerous places to buy tubes. I personally use http://www.findatube.com most of the time when buying assortments but frankly, unless there is something to indicate needing replacement tubes I wouldn't bother.

As for the speaker, the hole in the cone isn't an issue but I know what you mean about brittle. Most any original replacement is going to be equally brittle. There are places that do reconing but not inexpensive. Console sized speakers show up pretty often on ebay fairly cheap so you might just want to watch the marketplace for a while to see if you find a better one.

Good luck,
Bill

You might also find that your 1941 model has brittle rubber wiring which needs to be replaced. I justs bought a 41-250, and every wire will have to be changed. I like the radio, and would never expend the effort and time required to replace every wire on any radio I did not really like.
