1933 Cathedral Model 89B
#1

Hey everyone, I just acquired a model 89B Cathedral Radio. I will need to do a little Cabinet work and recap, etc. Was just wondering what you thought of these radios.. Here is a pic. Thanks.

The 89B is a great little radio. It is a nice size, good looking and the performance is very good for a 6 tube chassis

I agree, it's a great little performer. Nice looking cabinet!

But it can be an absolute bear to get working, especially if you have a 36 tube based oscillator. A bit of advice, stick close to the schematic in that area except for he 36 cathode resistor, change it to 8k6 or so.
You will likely have to rewind at least part of the oscillator coil as well, be careful and precise. I had to do mine four times before it worked well.

Good luck!

I love the style of these radios. Yours looks exactly like mine, though mine is a 19. Good luck with the restoration.

Hey Warren, Nice radio, I was looking at that one as well. They work great once fixed up and if you need any help please feel free. Skyscraper and I have been able to work out a couple isses with it.

Thanks, I will probably be taking you up on the offer for help. I still need to finish the 47-1230 I am doing now, might take a short rest after (the wife is asking why I am always working on the radio, etc). But, shouldn't be long til I start in on it. Icon_lol

Gregb's help has been invaluable, as has Mondial's, Morzh's and many others.

I will still have my chassis out for the near future, so I can try to help with anything as well. I've collected a large pile of notes on the 89/19.

By the way, When I bought this they said it was a 1936 but looking at the philco page it looks like the only one like it is a 1933. Can anyone tell me for sure if it is a 1933 or 1936? Thanks.

Does it have a 36 or a 77 in the oscillator socket? The 77 was used starting in 1934.

From the cabinet I would say 1933.

I haven't checked the oscillator tube... I will do that. thx.. Yes, I thought 1933 by the cabinet also.

That cabinet style was discontinued after spring 1934. Philco introduced a new cabinet style for the 1935 season, which came out in June 1934.

This cabinet remained in production until December 1935, halfway into the 1936 selling season. In January 1936, the final 89B cabinet was introduced:

Very plain, as you can see in the link.

Sounds like it must be a 1933 then. Thanks Ron, and all.
