Philco 37-611 restoration
#1

I picked this radio up a few years and did a quick recap.  Just enough to get it playing.  My recent experience working on a similar 37-640 got me thinking it was time to do a proper job.  That includes replacing the rotting rubber mounts now that I know how to get the RF chassis out Icon_smile

I'm also going to do something about that terrible refinishing job and speaker grille Icon_thumbdown

Here's a look inside. It's an AC/DC set with series wired tube filaments and two bands - SW and broadcast.

Some repairs had been made in the past.

Here's my quick recap I did back in 2011. It did work, but I wasn't able to get at all the paper caps under the bandswitch and didn't check the resistors.

I also had some trouble with than open power switch. I ended up taking it apart and cleaning the contacts. That did the trick Icon_smile

You are lucky that it's a 37-611 rather than a 37-116. It has a few more wires in the RF deck!
Nice work as always.

True, but a 37-116 has an RF stage this radio lacks ;) Definitely notice less gain than the 37-640.

I pulled the RF chassis out for servicing first.

Finally, I can get at that paper cap!

It's an oddball dual cap with a metcal collar being the common terminal.

I also restuffed the electrolytic and repacked the vernier drive bearings.

Now on to the rest of the chassis Icon_smile

Next up, I did a bit of chassis cleaning. The filter chokes had leaked out tar or wax which did a great job protecting the metal Icon_smile

Then, I finished rebuilding the rest of the caps and put it all back together. It works, but it doesn't have very good gain and there's a lot of background noise. Hoping an alignment will help.
