record plays at 78 but not 45

Hello,
Just found a cool old 50-1721 in a basement. I'd love to use it. It gets a hum at high volume. It turns but no sound unless its set at high rpm so you hear chipmunks but no sound at the correct speed. Any ideas? z

Hi Zeb and welcome to the Phorum,
Several thing come to mind. Would service the chassis by testing tubes and resistors replace foil/paper caps along w/ eletrolyics. This will give you a good starting point to do any further troubleshooting. The turntable give it a mechanical cleaning and lub. Not uncommon to find deteriorating rubber parts (driving the platen) that will need replacement. Another common issue is a weak cartridge (low output) and low tracking pressure. After 69yrs these sets aren't a plug and play unit any more. When my pals were reading comic books I was down in the basement in my dad's workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to figure out what all those squiggly meant. Circa 1966 Now I think I've got! Terry

Thank you very much... so far that is all a mystery to me so I'll start looking into how to do all that. I'd love to get it working again.
