Philco 90 Highboy Middle Repair
#1

A charity organization, St Vincent de Paul Society in Geneva Illinois ask if I can repair a 1931 Philco 90 Highboy that was donated.  They sell the donated items to help families in need.  I've repaired radios for them in the past.  I do not charge for the service or parts.    This radio has me a little stumped.  The speaker cone disintegrated.  I wanted to replace it with an aftermarket but was wondering on the impedance matching coil.   I will still use the filter choke from original speaker.   I will also replace all capacitors and check resistor values and condition of tubes.   The dial bezel and a knob is also missing.   Can someone advise on how to tackle the speaker issue.   Thanks[Image: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5HU3Pa...authuser=0][Image: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/yrMk3U...authuser=0][Image: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/BosZ7F...authuser=0][Image: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4JYlXW...authuser=0]

I would just buy a replacement cone, as the voice coil, and spider is intact, and glue the cone to the existing voice coil. In all honesty they should just sell the radio as an as is item, as a lowboy console it is fairly common, and even restored and working, the resale value is not high, maybe $200-250.

If you're thinking about replacing the speaker with a PM see if you can find what the impedance of a K2 (small cone) or H2 (large cone) speaker is. Someone here can direct you to the location. I did a quick look in the Library and didn't see it.

I like the idea of replacing the cone. Where can I find one. I looked online but can't seem to find one that will fit. Thankyou

I think the speakers.zip file is the one you are looking for. It’s in the thread at

I could not find a decent speaker cone source, so I sent the speaker to Rich Stamer at Speaker Remedy in New Jersey. While waiting for it should I replace the power cord with a 3 prong grounded to the chassis?

I do not think you need to. There is no safety concern. If you just want to add GND instead of having to hook a wire to the clipm should you decide to do so, then it makes sense. It is not necessary. And is easy to do any time you decide to.

Here is a how-to on the early speakers which often use a cone with a steeper/deeper pitch and a hole for the VC that is smaller than most of today's replacement cones:

Thankyou Phlogiston I will save that link next time I need to have a speaker reconed. It does not seem too difficult.

I received the reconed speaker from Rich Stamer a Sound Remedy in NewJersey.

Rich does superb job fixing these.
And he is a good guy overall, pleasure to deal with.
And on top of all this, his prices are very agreeable.

Hello Everyone
I'm recapping the Philco and a 3 section capacitor has me stumped.
A schematic states all 3 are 0.25 mF.  The part list shows 1.1mF, 1.13mF, and 2.25mF.
Are the difference in values critical?    Can I use the .25mF capacitors.
Thanks

It depends on whether the multi-section capacitor in question is part (24) or part (30).

Part (24) uses three 0.25 uF capacitors.
Part (30) uses one 0.1 uF, one 0.25 uF, and one 1.0 uF.

Thank you Ron it is part #24.

Recapped, and working. It's picking up the 3 strongest stations from Chicago. Not as loud as I would like, making progress though. Need some help with an alignment or further instructions on what to check.. I do have an RF generator and vacuum tube meter.
Thanks
