Philco 45 Butterfly Restoration Chronicles....Finished
#1

So I got this in the mail today and oh boy it is a mess of messes.
I was told it was poor condition but complete. I should have asked for more than the one picture I guess.
I must now figure out what is savable and what will have to be manufactured.

Maybe they "caught" that in a lake when fishing. Icon_eek

Oh, so you are the one who got "the radio that used to be beautiful".
Well, it'd be interesting to watch!

I saw wood fences in Russia in better shape than that.
And the paint used to be very popular for wood floors (we had full length timber planks, not parquet type).

The escutcheon looks good Icon_razz
Yes, will be fun to watch.

Dont think I have ever won anything that looks better than it was in the pictures. The seller always seems to use bad lighting to there advantage
#6

Well that was a bust, the top and front are gone. I salvaged the veneer but had to make a new top and front. Well, I am making the top and front.

Wow, this is serious stuff.
I hope you are not using a coping saw and have a router for that.

I do not even have a place to put a router.
#8

Unfortunately it is all being done by hand on my scroll saw but I will have to router the keys on the sides and top.

You'll get there. Once it's finished, you'll be glad you own it. They are good playing radios. Sound great.

Here is a link to a thread I did on mine....

Mine wasn't quite as far gone as yours, but you'll have to refinish yours at some point. Perhaps my thread will help..

Awesome,

It was a very big help. I have the same problem with the top tongue and groove.. It is almost all missing so I will have to fabricate new ones with some 1/4 square cuts.

Thanks for the link!

Today I got right into it.
Sanded roughly to level out the lines, stripped all that hideous red paint off of the rest of the salvageable pieces and began building and tweeking the cabinet.
Didnt realize that one side was a bit warped but It will have to do. If I replace any more pieces I may as well just build a new radio.
So, new top, old veneer, new front, old veneer, and original sides and bottom.

Looks like you've got it going your way, Old Res.
For future reference,.. I want to tell all you guys,..

I truly tried to help people on the Cabinet restoration forum of the arf.
They didn't want to hear about the correct way to do woodwork and finishing.
I have been doing both everyday for the last 28 years, so if you guys ever want my help, feel free to ask me.
I believe in working smart so you can enjoy a project instead of wearing yourself out and getting frustrated.
I don't claim to be anything, other than one with knowledge happy to help those willing to learn.

I will say this, If you use Oven cleaner for stripper, Gojo for a wood moisturizer , Howard's "Ignore a finish", or Polyurethane. And you are satisfied with these ?,.. then you won't be needing my help, I don't practice those applications.

I believe in restoring with the correct and the best materials for the job, if you don't have the money, save it up and do it right.

I am happy to lend a hand if anyone needs help.
Best way to contact me is through my website at :

You are well on your way, Old Res,.. looks like you are going to come through this Butterfly project with Flying colors Icon_eh Icon_lolno
