This is my first post - thanks for letting me join the group!!

Regarding my background - I restored/repaired a number of old radios in the late 1970's and early 80's, but have been away from the hobby for most of the last 40 years.

I recently picked up a Philco Chassis 91 code 123 radio. The radio is pretty complete, although I think it is missing one of the shields. The tubes are not all original philco branded tubes, so it has had some tube replacements in it's past. From looking under the chassis, I am pretty sure that there has never been any work done under there. All the bakelite blocks look original and the dogbone type resisters are still there.

I am pretty comfortable doing the restoration work to get the radio working again, and frankly that would be my primary interest - I don't really like display only radios - I want them to be functional.

All that being said - here is my real question: Would I be committing some kind of cardinal sin by digging into this radio - replacing all the paper capacitors in the bakelite blocks, electorlytics and any resistors that are drastically out of tolerance? Please let me know as I will probably dig into the thing in the next 2 or 3 days.

Thanks

Hello, I want to add a Bluetooth jack to my Philco 89. I'm thinking I can just add a stereo jack to the chassis sans switch and tune to a quiet spot on the dial. I would use two 1K resistors to tie the right and left channels together. I'm thinking I also want a cap to isolate any possible DC from the jack. Not sure where in the radio to make the connection. Can someone help?
Thank you,

Hello, Just thought I would mention I have restored a Philco 89 (123) where the 2nd IF transformer (the bell shaped one) had it's primary open resulting in no plate voltage on the 44 IF tube. I have done at least eight of these radios. Usually it is the antenna or oscillator coil that is open. So the 2nd IF is new to me. Did not find any loose wires. Had a parts chassis that donated it's coil. So on these radios from you know where something new cropped up. Also one of the 70K resistors was reading 160K. Quite the drift. Didn't look like it got hot. The power transformer had replaced. Mice got in there and made a nest and chewed some wires. The alignment was way off. Got lucky in that the antenna and osc coils were good. The speaker cone surround is pretty rotten so I used contact cement on it. All caps and most resistors have been replaced. Set plays well now.

Back to this forum after a long time. I have a nice looking 40-190. The AM reception is great; I use it to listen to baseball games. Replaced the capacitors a few years back. Two questions:
1) Shortwave reception is spotty at best. Any way to improve without an external antenna. I have a Radio Shack "Amplified Shortwave Antenna", model 20-280 that I tried to attach (not sure I am doing it correctly; cut the jack; one silver, one copper wire), but no real improvement. I have a tube tester and a multimeter; no other test equipment.
2) My local AM stations have changed their call signs. Any place make labels for the bush buttons? Or some way of making my own?
Thanks! -

Hopefully it’s the right place for this. Please (re)move if necessary.

A friend’s grandfather had a 40-81 portable radio he asked me to get running. Did the typical replace caps and brittle wires and got it working. Sounds amazingly good, really. Part of that was building a battery box to hold the A and B supplies.

Anyway, the battery box needed a cover so decided to make some in the style of the old batteries. A little massaging of the designs was involved (not 100% accurate but fairly close). These are 3D printed to fit the compartmented box I also printed that holds the batteries. For those that care, I used PETG for the box and its bits for heat tolerance near the tubes (which don’t seem to get too hot at all) but PLA for the cover plates for easy printing of the designs.

I knew nothing about tubes when I started and had some missteps. I get the radio back this week to mod the filament supply a little. Will post more about what worked and didn’t, etc.

Anyway, for whatever it’s worth. They snazz up a battery project. My friend only wanted a personalized cover plate. These were extra for fun. The high voltage Philco isn’t historical. It was just in the style my friend wanted but personalized and looked ok.

I have a philco 46 - 420 code 121. When I got it the antenna was missing and I eventually bought a parts set just for the antenna. However after a full recap and alignment it hums like crazy, I also get squeeling and motorboating with the tuning capacitor almost closed. I posted this problem in another forum and someone thought it was electrical interference in my house. I ran a dedicated line from my electric panel to the upstairs in my house. I used 12/2 Romex with a brand new receptacle, I even cut it in the wall. This will be the dedicated line for my AM radio. Then I went downstairs and I shut off every breaker in the house except for the dedicated line running the radio and the hum never went away. Does anybody have any ideas on what it could be? Oddly enough last Saturday at about 8:00 in the morning I turned the radio on and it played perfectly for three and a half hours. I had clear audio no hum at all and it actually sounded pretty good. I shut it off and went outside to do some yard work for a few hours. By the time I was done it was almost time for cousin Brucie so I turned it on and the hum was back. I've tried turning the plug but it made no difference. The tubes all test moderate, I replaced the 7A8 because I had a brand new one, I've tried switching the tubes from the parts set into it and haven't seen any kind of a difference either. I attached some pictures of my work on the chassis feel free to critique my work I love doing this stuff so I want to get better at it.

Here is a clip on youtube you can hear the squeeling and motor boating along with the hum between stations.

Hey guys,
Back in 1-2011 I posted a question on the Phorum regarding the decorative foil used on some cabinet inside bottoms. The original thread's images I uploaded are now not visible.
I cannot edit that post as it is closed to update the images, so I am posting again with the photos in case someone is interested or has an explanation.

(Original thread here on the Forum, attachments no longer visible):
https://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthrea...light=foil

Ron Ramirez originally had no idea. The actual purpose of the foil I presume was to make a cheap shield to keep out stray RF.
But the question was why the ornate designs? Some are pretty ornate. Myself and Ron was thinking the foil was bought by Philco from a source that originally used it as a wrapping possibly. It would seem plausible as Philco would have no reason to emboss foil that would never be seen by the consumers.
On the ARF an member just posted about this foil, and other than his post, I have never seen any others comment on the foil.
There is no asbe*tos under this.

So here are the original pics I posted in 2011
Any definitive reasons for the patterns is welcome. My opinion is the decorative foil was leftovers from another company or source, Philco made good use of it for their under chassis shielding. I believe I have other patterns on disc, but cannot access them at the moment.
Thanks guys!
This is my first post having just joined. I'm presently restoring two model 91's. One is a Code 121 and the other is a dual speaker Code 221. The 221 is the problem child. The schematic is beyond understanding. There is a 136 ohm segment on the BC resistor rod but it shows nowhere in the schematic. Where does it go in the circuitry?

Anyone ever had a 6Q7 cause the audio to fade out over about 4 sec then fade back in over about 4 sec? Darn thing did it intermittently quite a few times before dying all together.

Had this for a few decades but never looked into it because it played fine. Never knew there was the shadow meter due to the dead bulb. Re-capped, some resistors changed, new tuner bank rubber mounts. Thanks to Tom Oppat a new volume control. Never played like this before!
