Philco Tropic 48-890
#1

Hello all

I have unearthed this model from among my father's effects. I don't know much about these radios. It turns on and the tubes glow and it hums, but in terms of frequency, is there anything being broadcast these days on the various bands?

My intention is to sell (we are downsizing). However, I don't know how to "represent" the item in terms of "it works" (other than the glowing and humming thing)

I'm guessing someone in the forum knows a thing or two about this model...

Thank you.

Hello and welcome!

Your 48-890 is a 1948 model, and as part of Philco's "Tropic" line of radios, was made for export to Europe, Africa, Central/South America and Asia.

The humming indicates failing electrolytic capacitors. You should not attempt to operate the radio any more in that condition.

The AM band (.55 - 1.70 on the dial) is still very active, but there is not as much on the various short wave bands as there was 30 or more years ago.

Please check your private message (PM) inbox - I am sending you a PM about this radio.
