Some interesting things i found inside my 50A.

It is most part there and has seen heavy use the bakelite blocks where bypassed with just caps hanging in mid air and modern carbon comp in places. I had to repair the volume control it was half apart and hanging but after cleaning and assembly it tests fine. 
Some of the values where not correct i am guessing a WW2 repair? All the coils and transformer test good.

Yes paralleling newer caps to backelite blocks as they failed was a popular albeit ill-conceived measure.
Yes this would restore capacitance, but wouldn't remedy the leakage.
