Philco 38-C7-A Canadian Set
#1

A neighbor brought me the chassis out of a "family" radio and has asked me to make it operative. Here's the chassis tag information:
38-C7-A
Code 121
115 Volts
25-40 Cycles
70 Watts

The kicker is that he says he remembers then Canada changed from the 25-40 cycles to 60 cycles and that the set was converted (also says he remembers it playing with the new Canadian 60 cycles in the 1960's.

I've tried to research this and it seems their power company made free conversions back in the day from 25-40 cycles to 60 cycles at a cost of over $5,000,000. I've also read, but have a hard time believing, that you can run a Canadian set with the 25 - 40 cycle transformer on the newer 60 cycles because the earlier transformers were heavier and dissipated the heat OK. Not sure what to believe, so I need help! Also, IF (BIG IF) the set had been converted, it would seem the only thing that would have been changed would have been the transformer... Would that be right AND how can I tell IF that has been done? I'm out in the woods on this set and sure could use some help and input, PLEASE!
