So...have been continuing the recap. An earlier repair did some more creative rewiring on block Cap #12 seen here:

The paper tubular cap seen in the picture is a replacement for the original block cap and would have been internal to the block between lugs 1 & 3. I did some creative repair of my own to put a new lug #1 in place and rewired the block cap to use lugs #2 & 3 for the internal cap and lug 1 for the tie point. Next up is working on the rust on tuning cap and chassis. Taking the tuning cap off means also taking off the metal shields for the coils (I don’t think I mentioned it but the coils all seem to be good).

This allows you to get to the 3 screw/lug connections and 2 soldered ground connections to the tuning cap. [Image: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k5a0ypueefkyt9....jpg?raw=1] Being somewhat klutzy, I put some plastic shields around the coils to protect them a bit from straying screw drivers and soldering irons. Yes, I managed to melt some plastic in the process. We’ll see how it comes out.

When my pals were reading comic books I was down in the basement in my dad's workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to figure out what all those squiggly meant. Circa 1966 Now I think I've got! Terry

I didn't know that the tuning condensers in those model 50s were all steel? I didn't think that they could make those with ferrous metals in the plates, I thought that they had to be something like brass or aluminum?

A little more work on the 50. The tube shield got de-rusted and the lable on it was remade. The original was badly stained and at some point I manage to tear it. I was able to get it back together for a scan and then some clean up. Its not of the quality that Nathan is able to do but I'll post it in the download section in case someone needs it and and can't find a better one.

I had taken the tuner knob mechanism off thinking I needed to do that to get the dial off without drilling out the rivets but I wound up doing the drill out anyway (so I could dunk the tuner in Metal Rescue solution). Anyone happen to know what pilot bulb goes in the the Philco 50? It doesn't happen to be listed on the Riders or Beitman pages. I "think" I see 2.5 volts on the existing bulb and its a screw in type so I think its a #41 based on the info on Chuck's pages. Thanks!

I am always amazed when these rusty hulks get cleaned up, recapped, recarbed, repaired and actually come back to life Amazingly on this set, all the coils were OK. The only replacement part other than resistors and caps was the audio transformer which had an open primary. The replacement came from Playthings from the Past. This 50 is now playing. I'll check alignment but I think its actually pretty close as the set is playing as well as most that I've worked on. I'll put the dial back on, align it and start on the cabinet.

Nice work. It's part of what makes the hobby fun, when you power one up for the first time after rebuild and it comes to life after sitting silent for who knows how many years.
