42-380: Looking under the chassis
#1

Since I haven't ordered parts for this set yet, I thought I'd take the time to check what I'll need in addition to caps and resistors.

Power transformer reads good resistance, so hooray. Icon_thumbup

Audio output transformer (part #32-8120) has an open primary. Icon_thumbdown
That's 2 for 2 1942 model Philcos I've worked on with bad audio xfmrs.

Anyway, the service bulletin for this model says that it's only 3 watts audio output. I'm thinking a Hammond 125B or 125C will work as a generic replacement. Though I do wonder how much the sound will suffer given that these Hammond's frequency response is only 150Hz-15KHz. Was the original any better?

It's not how bad you mess up, it's how well you can recover.
