40-190 skyscraper
#1

Picked up a 40-190 skyscraper today and it is missing a couple tubes.
According to the label one of them is a number 84(rectifier tube) and the other is a 7B7.
Why is it I can't find an 84 tube on ebay?
Are they rare tube?
Is there a substitute for this tube?
Thanks

NOS 84 tube for $6 at http://findatube.com/

Other sources you can check for tubes here: http://www.philcoradio.com/resourceb.htm#w

Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-VINTAGE-TYPE-8...3a87f02106 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/One-Tested-Good-...231ed72265

6Z4 is a sub for it also.

Neither tube expensive or rare. WTB on lclassified here should get you good ones for, I reckon $15 delivered CONUS. I don't have, or I would donate them for postage only.

Nice find Murf. Post pictures as you go through it.

Also, eBay seller "k5svc" has NOS 84's for $5 each or a 5-pack for $25 ($5.50 shipping either way). Government surplus. I bought a 5-pack and they came with a packaging date of December 1980. All are brand new and tested strong.

And I love the 40-190 cabinet. Gorgeous lines. Icon_smile

Ok Guy's,
Has all good tubes in it now.
Electrolitics were replaced earlier by someone else. Kind of a hack job.
Powers on ok, but no audio other than a barely audible humm or buzz from the speaker. No static at all.
Had an ipod hookup wired to the speaker which I cut off.
That was a messy job someone else did, so I remmoved the wires from the speaker.
Is there any change needed in the speaker wiring now that I removed the ipod wires from the speaker?
Anyway, where do you guy's suppose I should start looking?
Kind of cluttered under the chassis with the pushbutton controls.
Makes it hard to get to the tube pins if I wanted to check voltages.
Learn a little more each time I work on a Philco chassis. Not as simple as most.

You are probably just wasting your time hunting for the problem. Replace all of the paper caps, check and/or replace the resistors. As you are going through it check the work done by the previous owner, clean the switches and pots and when you get done, watch the B+ when you bring it up, 9 out of ten chances it will work. If not, then start looking for the problem.

Just a thought, and maybe you know this already, but the pushbutton furthest to the right has to be pushed in when using the dial tuning. I found that out the hard way when working on my 40-150Icon_redface!

Yeah, typical for these.
I have a couple rca's that are the same.
Thanks for the reply.
